You are invited to join more than 400 representatives of Ministries, joint bodies, international and non-governmental organizations and academia from all regions of the world who will come together in Astana, Kazakhstan from 10 to 12 October, to discuss transboundary water cooperation, at the eighth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 8) to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention). This high-level meeting, organized by the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) which services the Water Convention, is in many ways historic: it will be the first MOP held in Asia and the first one with membership of the Convention beyond the pan-European region, symbolically marking the beginning of a new era for the Convention.
During the meeting, topics such as the benefits of transboundary water cooperation, climate change adaptation, the water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus and industrial safety will be discussed. Furthermore, the meeting will launch the first report on the implementation of the Water Convention, and discuss the first reporting on SDG indicator 6.5.2, jointly supported by UNECE and UNESCO. Finally, the meeting will adopt a strategy for the implementation of the Convention at the global level as well as the Convention’s programme of work for 2019-2021.
