In July 2020, the International River Foundation (IRF) launched a preview of a number of key components of the Resilient Rivers Blueprint in the Resilient Rivers Hub. It is a platform which aims to provide river managers across the globe with a resource and a venue to share knowledge and experiences to assist them in their quest to establish resilient river systems.
Resilience, in general, is the ability of a substance to revert into its original form. In the midst of a tough and challenging condition, resilience is what helps one to quickly bounce back from difficulties.
River resilience is the capacity of a river system and its associated communities to quickly recover from disturbances, adapt to changes without collapsing, and to improve through innovation and implementation of resilience strategies.
The IRF, partners and collaborators work together in developing the Blueprint to be able to build on existing river basin and integrated water resource management frameworks, provide a suite of innovative engagement and financing mechanisms for river management, showcase recovery to resilience pathways through case studies, catalyze reforms in river governance, and foster increased climate resilience among rivers and their basins by encouraging river basin organizations to integrate these in planning and design.
The Resilient Rivers Blueprint incorporates the River Journey, the River Resilience Report Card, and the Resilient Rivers Hub, each to play a vital role in helping build and achieve resilience in a river and its community.
The online Resilient Rivers Blueprint currently includes two self-assessment tools – River Personalities and River Journey, which are open for testing and trial. These interactive quizzes will identify where one is on the journey to river resilience.
