Yet, PACA LME is facing threats of biodiversity loss, mainly due to human activities such as pollution, degradation of the coastal and marine ecosystems, overfishing, direct impacts on flora and fauna, and climate change. These issues are further worsened by the increasing demand for seafood, growth in world commerce, rising tourist demand, and inadequate management and regulation of resource exploitation. Given this complex situation, it is essential to adopt a comprehensive approach, one that the Sustainable Pacific Project will promote in the region to manage and protect crucial elements of the blue economy, such as humpback whales, large pelagic fish, shorebirds, mangroves, and coral reefs.
In 2023, the Sustainable Pacific Project was launched as an unprecedented collaboration among Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador. Working with the PACA LME countries and its stakeholders, this project is dedicated to finding solutions for the cross-border marine governance of the LME to overcome significant challenges and to work towards a safer and sustainable future. Guided by the blue economy vision, this collaborative approach aims to protect the marine environment while ensuring the prosperity of the communities that depend on it.
